How Bin Tagging Works
RFID tagging of wheeled bins and other refuse containers is well established in the commercial waste sector. Also known as 'chip and bin', the technology is less well used in the UK domestic sector, despite a large population of UK domestic bins being 'chipped' in readiness for future use.
Each bin has a unique tag (or 'chip') which contains a serial number. The read range, typically only a few centimetres, allows each lifter to identify the bin that has been presented. On-board systems can then validate that the bin should be lifted and record that the lift has occurred.
Validation of the bin may include one or more of the following checks
- the bin belongs to the operator (typically on a commercial contract)
- the bin has not already been lifted on this round
- the bin is of the correct type (e.g. glass, residual, green waste)
- the bin is not 'blacklisted' due to overdue accounts etc
The actions taken for an invalid bin are completely programmable - on a domestic round it is common to allow all lifts and analyse the data after the round is complete, whilst on commercial rounds the crew may or may not have the ability to override the lifter.
Real Time Updates
Waste Collector Chip! includes all this functionality and more. Unlike many systems Waste Collector Chip! transmits all routing and round data 'over the air' in real-time, without the need to swap out memory cards. Routes can be updated whilst the round is in progress for the ultimate in control and flexibility.
Systems Integration
Waste Collector Chip! also includes real-time updates from the vehicle back to the control centre. The route can be visualised on a 3D map and bins automatically change colour as the lift is completed. Invoicing and customer service no longer rely on paperwork and manual workflow - the entire process can be fully automated using Waste Collector Link!.
Recycling Participation
Participation and 'set out rates' are easily monitored with Waste Collector Chip! Each bin lift is recorded and the powerful reporting functionality quickly identifies premises who never participate, suddenly start or suddenly stop. Set out rates can be reported for individual premises, streets, post codes or locality to allow more efficient targeting of recycling campaigns.
A Proven Solution
Waste Collector Chip! is supplied and developed in partnership with Vishay PM Onboard, a leading supplier of vehicle ID and weighing systems. Waste Collector Chip! combines 'best of breed' software and hardware systems and is also available as BinWeigh II+.
